Work Appropriate Beauty Tips

04.17.2012

I know many of our readers out there are probably working a corporate day job like me. Being 25, I am one of the youngest in the office and I often feel a little self conscience about what is or isn’t work appropriate from a beauty stand point. How much make up should I wear? What is an appropriate hairstyle? Red lips…too much?

Here are some of my beauty tips on how to come across effortlessly fresh and beautiful at work but still maintain your corporate edge.

Keep make up classic and simple – There is definitely a difference between day and night make up looks. At the office, liquid liner and false lashes are not needed. Go clean and fresh. Tinted moisturizer, powder, color on the cheeks, soft hues on the eyes, a great daytime mascara, and tinted gloss is perfect.

Keep hairstyle chic and professional – Don’t be afraid to show your personal style as long as it’s not distracting. Cute angled bobs, blunt bangs, or a great hair color is perfectly acceptable. I would stay away from ultra big hair (think Diana Ross in the 70′s) or hair that is greasy. That may sound like a weird comment but ladies – it looks so unprofessional to come to work and see your hair stuck to your head like you just came from the gym. Come to work looking clean and well groomed.

Don’t go overboard with the perfume - I have to tell myself this one all the time but smelling like you just had a test session at sephora is very distracting during meetings and interactions at your place of employment. Wear deodorant and about 2 sprays of a soft scent for the entire day.

Add touches of your personality in your clothing choices – Even though hot pink lips may not be the best choice for the office, add funky jewelry to your shift dress or a cute pair of heels. You need to look professional but little splashes of color are completely appropriate and will actually make you seem more approachable.

Spice up a dull look with a hot nail color – It is winter here in Australia and to combat the cold, I have been sporting hot pink and red nails (the pic above are my nails at work!) for about 3 weeks and I have received tons of compliments! Keeping your nails well manicured is important especially if you are working with clients out of the office. For me, the splash of color on my nails reminds me that even though I am a youngster in the corporate world and I want to be taken seriously, I am still Ash and I like to keep things spicy.
