The beautiful people came out to sparkle at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City earlier this week. The gala event marked the launch of the Met’s much-anticipated Savage Beauty exhibition, which charts Alexander McQueen’s career. According to the museum, ‘his iconic designs constitute the work of an artist whose medium of expression was fashion.’
‘Approximately one hundred examples will be on view, including signature designs such as the bumster trouser, the kimono jacket, and the Origami frock coat, as well as pieces reflecting the exaggerated silhouettes of the 1860s, 1880s, 1890s, and 1950s that he crafted into contemporary silhouettes transmitting romantic narratives.’ The exhibition will be open to the public from May 4, and will run until July 31.
Many of the gowns this year had an adventurous and eccentric spirit. I would like to think that Cate Blanchett (a PDS style favorite) was the original seed to this movement towards avant-garde, less traditional gowns. In February, Blanchett rocked the Oscar’s in a Givenchy Couture dress with beautiful yellow detailing on the back along with Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry.
A number of MET gala dresses seemed to follow suit, with striking colors, playful accents and intricate design patterns. I think Christina Ricci stole the show in her dramatic black Zac Posen gown. Isabel Lucas also looked amazing in her LV dress and fabulously eclectic accessories. Which dress is your favorite?
