Interview: 10 Questions with Reuven Pinson of Astor and Black

1. How many suits should a man own?
“A man who wears a suit everyday – Monday through Friday- needs to own at least 10 suits. Why? A suit should have a two week rest period. Suits need time to rest and to breath. This will avoid you spending a fortune on new suits every year if you wear them properly.”
2. How often should you dry clean your suits?
“HUGE MISTAKE! If you own the proper amount of suits in your wardrobe, you will not need to send them to the dry cleaners all the time. Sending a suit to the dry cleaners once a month is ridiculous- that’s why suits tend to look worn out. You only really need to send your suits twice a year to the dry cleaners if you follow my rule of a two week rest period. Unless you spill gravy on your pants- don’t send it to the dry cleaners too often.”
3. When is a good time for a guy to throw out his old shoes?
“Most guys know when a pair of shoes is ready to be thrown out. Whether they will throw it out is another question. Men should not wear the same pair of shoes everyday. I recommend having 4 pairs of nice dress shoes in your closet at all times. 2 brown and 2 black that you can switch out. If the soles are looking worn down or there is a hole inside of your shoe and you can see to the bottom? It’s time for them to hit the bin.”
4. What is one risk you wish more men would take?
“There is no such thing as being overdressed. Guys get too scared to put on formal or nice clothing. I think guys are afraid to look too good! Looking good will make you feel and act more confident. Put on a three piece suit! Add some color! There is no such thing as being overdressed.”
5. What should women be looking for in a well dressed man?
“How do girls know if a guys is well dressed? By his shoes and his pocket square.”
6. Who is your favorite style icon?
“Definitely Tom Ford. He has a great eye for that european look in menswear. His clothes have sutble style, great cuts, and are extremely well crafted. I love just about anything he puts out.”
7. What is one thing you want to see change in menswear?
“Men wearing clothing that actually fit! I meet guys all of the time who buy really expensive suits or clothes that are just amazing, but they don’t take the time to get them fitted to their shape. That is why the company I work is incredible because all of our suits are custom made to fit you – at half the price of other convased suits.”
8. What are 5 items a man should always have in his closet?
- Navy blue suit
- Solid grey suit
- Black leather shoes
- Laced black shoes
- Great pair of fitted jeans
“All of these things can be mixed and matched, but you have to have the basics before you can add more to your wardrobe. I could go on for hours about other pieces you should have in your closet, but you need to have these 5 things regardless.”
9. Besides clothing, what else should men be doing to keep themeselves groomed and polished?
“1. Exercise: Let’s be honet, a slim man is going to look that much better in a slim suit. But it is important to stay active and keep a healthy mind as well as a healthy body
2. I live in Melbourne so I love going to the beach. Wearing sun block of course is important, but having a nice healthy glow while wearing a beautifully crafted pink shirt is perfection.
3. Keep the hair under control. Get regular haircuts, be clean shaven. I’m not all about the products. Just be sure to be clean and well manucired and you will always look put together.”
10. What can you not live without?
“My Family” (my beautiful wife Zahava and my 9 month old son Josh). If you have a strong family who love and support what you do, you can achieve anything.”
